Production Readiness reviews

Two production readiness reviews where conducted at CERN: one for the pressure vessels and one for the MgB2 cable production.

The pressure vessel review covered the scope and interfaces, quality assurance, manufacturing and inspection plan, documentation procedures, production schedule and associated resources. In general, everything is well defined and only some improvements to be made have been noticed.

The panel’s view is that production can start provided that the following actions are implemented: check the validity of the MS-4269; upload and approve all documents related to this procurement in the HL-LHC EDMS baseline; complete the documents linked to the delivery of components to US AUP.

Further steps include: creation of a new DR; the finalization and formalization of the interfaces before the notification of the contract; formalization of CERN holding points in the MIP; request the support of the Project Office to train the supplier to use MTF. The MgB2 cable review covered the scope and interfaces, quality assurance, manufacturing and inspection plan, documentation procedures, production schedule and associated resources. The panel’s recommendation is that the series production can start provided that the following actions are carried out: implement MTF as soon as the MIP is approved; study logistics (handling and transport) in detail; approve manufacturing and inspection procedures before starting series production; ensure backup of the main WPE; review the quality plan to check that it contains information on the calibration of instrumentation used during the testing; launch the DO for the instrumentation cables. Further steps include to: negotiate with the contractor the uploading of documents directly in MTF by their personnel; study the use of bar codes on the wire as soon as it is delivered at CERN; ensure that the contract for inspectors could be finalized in time or look for other alternatives; monitor evolution of SM18 test plan to take in consideration changes in the testing schedule (other components).
