Project Planning and EVM

The implementation of the EVM (Earned Value Management) system for the HL-LHC project was ready for the 2nd Cost & Schedule Review (CSR) that was held in October 2016. This tool tracks, among other things, the schedule and cost variances of the project with respect to estimates made by the project team at the time of the CSR.

The tool provides EVM metrics for the global project, but also at the level of each work-package and products defined as such in the PBS (Product Breakdown Structure) of HL-LHC. A snapshot of the HL-LHC EVM plot is provided below, which shows an earned value of about 94 MCHF, representing a slight delay of about 2 months w.r.t. the original plan.

Major contributors to ‘Earned Value’ are today WP3 (IR Magnets), WP4 (RF systems) and WP11 (11T Dipole). The technical infrastructure work-package (WP17) will become one of the key players as of mid-2018 which corresponds to the start of the Civil Engineering activities.

New developments of the EVM tool are still being implemented to provide useful dashboards to the project team, as well as to answer recommendations given by the CSR review members.
