Start of series production for RFD CC at Zanon

In the framework of HL-LHC AUP in the US, last year two prototype RF Dipole Crab Cavities manufactured in Italy by Zanon Research & Innovation were validated successfully at FNAL through cold tests at 2K. One prototype reached a deflecting field voltage of 5.8 MV which is 40% above acceptance and 70% above nominal. The quality factor achieved at 4.1 MV was Q0 = 1e10 which is about 2.5 times acceptance.

Contracts for 12 production units are now in place and fabrication of 2 pre-series units has started with deliveries expected later this fall.

Production Readiness Reviews for cavities and higher-order mode (HOM) dampers were completed without showstoppers signaling that the project has in fact entered the production phase. HOM dampers are manufactured in the US by Jefferson Lab and delivered to FNAL for installation on cavities before a cold test.

The first dressed cavity tests for the prototypes, which will include dampers, are expected to take place towards the end of the year at FNAL.

The 10 cavities that pass acceptance tests in the final configuration, will be delivered to TRIUMF by 2024 for integration into cryomodules and final shipment to CERN for tunnel installation in the HL-LHC.
