Prototype RFD cavity tests at TRIUMF: Status and progress with TCM0 and preparation for TCM1 activities

|

Major expenditures have been completed in time to spend the allocated funds and procure all components required for the cryostating activities of the 5 series RFD cryomodules.

In February 2025, TRIUMF received a prototype RFD cavity (TCM0) from AUP after it had been tested at JLab with both warm and cold characterisations. The cavity passed through customs with only minor delays and was uncrated and examined at TRIUMF. RF adaptors from CERN to allow RF measurements were received on 7th March.

Warm RF measurements of the prototype cavity with the RF adaptors were completed. The RFD prototype cavity was then installed in the TRIUMF vertical cryostat on 17th March, cooled to 4.2K on 20th March, and to 2K on 21st March.

The cryogenic tests were designed to validate the earlier cold test results at JLab and to qualify TRIUMF’s cold test hardware in preparation for the arrival of the series cavities later this year.

The first RFD cold test at TRIUMF represents a major milestone for the HL-LHC RFD team.  All the new test infrastructure works very well, and warm and cold measurement results matched all AUP test results, with further RF conditioning also allowing the cavity to reach higher results. The test confirms that TRIUMF is ready to receive the series cavities from AUP expected later this year.

TCM0 procedures and fixtures are now being reviewed with the goal to begin string assembly in June in the new clean room.
